Crispy, Buttery, Berbere Magic at Yosi's Cafe
Kitcha fitfit, a dish from Eritrea and Ethiopia, is one of my favorite breakfasts. Chef Azeb uses the freshest ingredients to create tender bites seasoned with delightful berbere—a spice blend starring red chili peppers. If you love kitcha fitfit or are curious to try it, visit Yosi’s Cafe in Oakland, CA.

Haben Girma sits inside a cafe with a plate of golden brown, bite-sized pieces of kitcha fitfit in front of her.
Haben: Kitcha fitfit is like the bread and butter of my childhood, and adulthood. So it is literally bread, a type of unleavened bread, that’s been shredded and then is soaked in delicious butter and berbere spices.
She takes a bite.
Haben: The outsides are just lightly crispy and the insides are soft, melt-in-your-mouth flavorful! Some people mix the kitcha fitfit with yogurt. It’s all up to you! Eat it the way you want to enjoy it. It’s all delicious!
She reaches for another bite, and the video jumps to a close-up of the plate of kitcha with a small bowl of yogurt on top. The yogurt has slivers of jalapeños mixed in.
Haben (voiceover): Yosi’s Cafe in Oakland, California.
